“The most environmentally benign building is the one that need not be built because it already exists” (Grammenos and Russel, 1997)

“The greenest building… is the one that is already built.” (Elefante, 2007)

Retrofitting, renovation, conversion, modification, alteration, reorganization, upgrading and enhancement of existing buildings are crucial strategies to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in architecture and building construction. However, there are … more

‘Postplasticism’ departs from the rigid geometries of Neoplasticism: the austere, geometrical, abstract style labelled by Mondrian one century ago, which focused on strict, geometric forms and primary, applied colours. Postplasticism embraces a more ornate, organic, … more

This dissertation investigates the object-like ornament in architecture and examines its historiographic and contemporary constitution in design practice. The work is therefore both theoretical and applied. The topic of the dissertation, the ornament, is positioned at the heart of architecture and thus also amidst a cultural and technological debate, the social significance of which has become increasingly noticeable in recent years. The field … more

Super High-Res Assembly II

Prodigal Digitality – An Efflorescence of Fine Arts in postdigital Architectures

Team: Marjan Colletti, Peter Massin, Galo Moncayo Asan

‘Face it – the Digital Revolution is over.‘

 (Nicholas Negroponte, Beyond Digital, 1998)

In his 1992 book Neo-baroque: A Sign of the Times Italian semiologist Omar Calabrese suggested that the post-modern 1980s were infused with a pervasive neo-baroque spirit of ‘instability, polydimensionality, and change‘, which could be witnessed … more

Natures of postdigital beings

Ein Habitat für realvirtuelle Wesen

Team: Theresa Uitz, Peter Massin

Digitality has created two ideological worlds, one within (virtuality) and one outside(physicality). Architects traditionally design for the physical, but since the advent of digitality, they also design in the virtual. The physical is serious, and its design influences our environment significantly permanently. Virtuality, however, is playful and exuberant; its design is democratised and innocuous in terms of impact compared to the physical world. The boundaries between these two opposed worlds … more

Postdigital Nature of Planet B

Postdigital Natures of Planet B is a large-scale, robotically 3D-printed 1:1 installation made of recycled plastic and other bespoke biodegradable materials. It proposes artificial-natural, physical-virtual, technological-botanical hybridity as metaphor for a future vision of a more intricate rapport between architecture and nature I the Anthropocene. It does this by exploring ambiguous overlaps and interfaces between the natural, the virtual, and the built environments. The installation was developed for and exhibited at the ARS Electronica Festival 2022 by the PDNB research … more
