“The most environmentally benign building is the one that need not be built because it already exists” (Grammenos and Russel, 1997)

“The greenest building… is the one that is already built.” (Elefante, 2007)

Retrofitting, renovation, conversion, modification, alteration, reorganization, upgrading and enhancement of existing buildings are crucial strategies to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in architecture and building construction. However, there are … more

‘Postplasticism’ departs from the rigid geometries of Neoplasticism: the austere, geometrical, abstract style labelled by Mondrian one century ago, which focused on strict, geometric forms and primary, applied colours. Postplasticism embraces a more ornate, organic, … more

Vertical Archipelagos 1/2

Final presentations

Bachelor studio: Vertical Archipelagos (848136 PJ Design Studio 3)

Supervisors: Prof. Marjan Colletti, Andreas Körner, Jade Bailey

In 1972, anthropologist John Murra introduced the ‘vertical archipelagos’ hypothesis in his research on Andean cultures. This concept elucidates the emergence of communities within non-adjacent ecological strata. Diverse elevations yield distinct climatic conditions, resulting in advantageous enclaves and isolated pockets within a broader framework. As seasons transition and circumstances fluctuate, intermittent bridges and corridors form, uniting ecologies that would otherwise … more

E3 Vertical Archipelagos: Multi-level Alpine Habitats

Course No.: 848136 – Group 1
Teaching: Andreas Körner & Jade Bailey & Prof. Marjan Colletti

This concept elucidates the emergence of communities within non-adjacent ecological strata. Diverse elevations yield distinct climatic conditions, resulting in advantageous enclaves and isolated pockets within a broader framework. As seasons transition and circumstances fluctuate, intermittent bridges and corridors form, uniting ecologies that would otherwise remain apart.

Exploring thermochromic materials as surrogate models for the design integration of surface weathering in architecture.

Abstract:

Current environmental and ecological pressures lead architects to reconsider the relationships between the inside and the outside, the permanence of surfaces, and the ageing of buildings. Integrating weathering through design and contextualising it in architectural theory are key components of this paradigm shift. This doctoral dissertation explores thermochromic materials as surrogate models … more

Super High-Res Assembly II

Prodigal Digitality – An Efflorescence of Fine Arts in postdigital Architectures

Team: Marjan Colletti, Peter Massin, Galo Moncayo Asan

‘Face it – the Digital Revolution is over.‘

 (Nicholas Negroponte, Beyond Digital, 1998)

In his 1992 book Neo-baroque: A Sign of the Times Italian semiologist Omar Calabrese suggested that the post-modern 1980s were infused with a pervasive neo-baroque spirit of ‘instability, polydimensionality, and change‘, which could be witnessed … more

The Yokohama Ferry Terminal building by Foreign Office Architects was designed in 1995 and built in 2002. It has been an icon of digital architecture, embodying computation paradigms, smoothness, and fluidity. Now, almost three decades later, the studio invites students to rethink those paradigms. While the movement of passengers through the building was a form-giving parameter for the terminal, it was also an analogy to the flow of water. In … more
