REX | LAB REX|LAB
is a space for realizing ideas. The tools are robotic actuators and the
language is CAD programs and code. Going from idea to tangible object
is always a form of translation, and interpretation. With robotics and
software these processes are very flexible and subject to exploration.
As a medium they both claim universality. Six-axis industrial robots are
universal manipulators. Code is universal expression of everything
calculatable (turing-complete). This paired with their novel nature leaves much to be found, discovered, and realized.

A post-digital installation within the 'Show Garden' silver medal winner GARDENING WILL SAVE THE WORLD - IKEA & TOM DIXON pavilion* at the 2019 RHS Royal Chelsea Flower Show .
'Terrestrial Reef' is a large, biodegradable 3D print hybridizing natural and synthetic elements such as soil, agar, Reishi mushrooms and robots. Conceived as a fictional 21st century techno-organic garden, it reflects on the often troubled, incompatible, even oppressive binary relationship of the built environment with the natural environment. Terrestrial Reef depicts nature as complex multi-domain ecology, challenging the common cultural association of gardens and parks as mere ‘greenery’. It examines the implications and opportunities in decision-making in a scenario where landscapes would be designed and shaped by artificial intelligence and robots. What aesthetic paradigms would learning machines develop for a hybrid ecosystem of natural and artificial symbionts?
Terrestrial Reef is the second installment of the conceptual ‘anti-garden’ framework of ‘Pahoehoe Beauty’, developed for the 2018 Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.

The trans-disciplinary and post-digital series entitled FrAgility
addresses the fragility/agility of design, technology, materiality,
environment, nature and architecture in the 21st century, and results
from the collaboration of a plethora of disciplines (industry,
craftsmen, material scientists, biologists, couturiers, artists,
engineers…).

Wir leben in einer Zeit der Digitalisierung, der Automatisierung, der
künstlichen Intelligenz - der vierten industriellen Revolution. Noch
können wir die Reichweite ihrer Auswirkungen nicht ganz voraussehen;
Diskussion stellen.
Dauer der Ausstellung: 24. Jänner - 3. März 2018

TAB main exhibition Body Building, curated by Sille Pihlak
and Siim Tuksam, presents an impressive line-up of internationally
renowned architects and researchers, experimenting on the borderline of
architecture, using new materials, cutting edge technology (robotic
fabrication, multi material 3d printing, real time data analyses) and
reaching out to new disciplines (fashion, engineering). The main exhibition is open from 11th September to 11th October
2015 in the Museum of Estonian Architecture, Ahtri 2, Tallinn. Find out
more about the participants and take a peak at the gallery here.

FrAgile 2: Porous Cast
The
installation is part of a series of prototypical (and theoretical) investigations into FrAgility (fragile
+ agile), which explore the synthesis of agile robotic fabrication methods with
fragile materiality. The series includes tests with polyurethane foam, hot melt
glue-gun adhesive, plaster, polyactic lacid PLA, acrylonitrile butadiene
styrene ABS, polycaprolactone PCL, concrete, Stewalin, gel pellets, clay, sand
etc.
FrAgility is a key aspect characterizing all of them -
an implication for openness, dynamism, hybridity, agility and fragility. In
this case a simple technique
of form-carving and casting was combined with gel inlays creating “self-organized” porosity. Porosity adds
additional properties to the resulting prototype, for example thermal
absorption, lightness or allowing environment for other (natural) organisms -
as a synergy between the natural and the artificial.

QUAQUAVERSAL
For Spring/Summer 2016
Iris Van Herpen explores the powerful confluence of nature and
architecture. Inspired by the living tree bridges in India, the
designer executes a new approach to garment construction, mixing the
techniques of cutting, weaving, folding and growing into a process that
transcends the boundaries of traditional clothes-making.[...]
