SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Xenoaesthetics\nGonzalo Vaíllo\nin conversation with\nGiacomo Pala\nJordi Vivaldi \nintroduction by\nKarolin Schmidbaur \nWednesday\, May 27\, 6:30 pm\nHochbau Institut\nFaculty of Architecture\nUniversity of Innsbruck \nExamining our relationships with architecture beyond human-centric perspectives\, Xenoaesthetics challenges conventional views of design and space inhabitation by exploring the architectural project as an autonomous entity.\nDrawing together insights from philosophy and architecture\, this book delves into the conditions\, roles\, and implications of architectural encounters\, conceptualising the architectural project as a site of unity-multiplicity tension\, and introducing the concept of xenoaesthetics as a cognitive mode attuned to this structure. This approach invites readers to reimagine architectural experience as a dual action that reveals the project to us and realizes itself through us.\nAs well as implying disciplinary consequences for design questions\, Vaillo’s work holds socio-political significance for our everyday architectural interactions\, contributing to the quest for practices and discourses on equality. Methodologically\, his argument draws from Object-Oriented Ontology and the architect Enric Miralles\, offering an additional retrospective crossover that enriches both references.\nA resource for students\, architects\, scholars\, and enthusiasts interested in exploring architecture beyond assumptions and prescribed value systems\, Xenoaesthetics encourages a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between humans and the architectural project.

He builds architectures without function\, entitled pre-architecture\, in open spaces\, sculpture parks\, or any situation exempt from urban regulations. While inventing an architectural genre through the development of alternative constructive systems\, Leschelier responds to the sclerosis of the architectural discipline by creating an immediate\, naked\, speaking architecture. Drawing inspiration from performance art\, vernacular architecture and industrial abstraction\, Leschelier’s pre-architecture is an attempt to break with the logic of the discipline and through its immediacy\, to resynchronize with the speed of the present. \nMarc Leschelier was a fellow at the Villa Medici in 2017–2018 and a resident at Casa Wabi in 2025. His work has been awarded by Herzog and De Meuron with the redistribution of their prize at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris this year. He will be a workshop leader next year at Porto Academy. In March 2025\, he opened a solo show in Paris in dialogue with historic pieces by Jean Prouvé on loan from a private collector. He has exhibited his work at Christophe Gaillard Gallery\, Mascota Gallery\, Spazio Maiocchi or Dover Street Market. He has participated in international fairs such as Design Miami Paris\, Salone del Mobile and Art Brussels. Over the past six years\, he has built ten permanent and ephemeral pavilions.

SUMMARY:Variegated Poché
DESCRIPTION:PhD Defence / Rigorosum\nAndreas Körner\, BSc MArch \n  \nVariegated Poché \nExploring thermochromic materials as surrogate models for the design integration of surface weathering in architecture. \n  \nAbstract: \nCurrent environmental and ecological pressures lead architects to reconsider the relationships between the inside and the outside\, the permanence of surfaces\, and the ageing of buildings. Integrating weathering through design and contextualising it in architectural theory are key components of this paradigm shift. This doctoral dissertation explores thermochromic materials as surrogate models for weathering as a design tool. Thermochromics change colour due to temperature. The research projects investigate the textural relationship between surfaces\, substrates\, and environments. The study employs a mixed-methods approach. First\, a comprehensive literature review surveys the contemporary and historical concepts of weather\, colour\, texture\, and poché. The correlation between the 19th-century debate on architectural polychromy and anthropogenic pollution acts as a historical case study for today’s relationship between ornament and climate change. Subsequently\, the method of thermochromic programming is developed via five design research projects. Consequently\, aesthetic chromogenic correlations between natural\, long-term weathering and reversible\, short-term thermochromic materials are outlined. The findings demonstrate that thermochromic programming can act as a surrogate model to explore design aspects of augmented weathering in architecture. Modulating thermal mass\, topography\, and strategic layering of coatings\, informed by environmental simulations\, can control the thermochromic response. While the results provide a sufficient basis to assess the method’s viability for design\, further long-term and large-scale control studies are required. A series of provocative arguments are formed by critically reflecting on the findings from design\, history\, and theory. They range from cutaneous terminology like ‘complexion’ for chromogenic phenomena on architectural surfaces to proposing the transplantation of integrated building services from within the poché to the outward-facing side of its tissue. This research contributes to the field of architecture by providing a historical contextualisation of environmentally induced colour change\, the development of material-based design and simulation methods\, and the extrapolation of findings to establish novel frameworks for augmenting weathering. \n  \nBoard of Examiners:\nAssoc. SUMMARY:Affect Lecture5 - Carl Pruscha
DESCRIPTION:Carl Pruscha – An unusual architect \nIn architecture – as in art – life and work are usually closely intertwined.\nCarl Pruscha is an unusual architect. His works can be found in three geographically distant places that have had a strong influence on him. New York\, Kathmanu and Vienna. In the United States\, Pruscha designed visionary and utopian projects. He found reality in Nepal\, where the UN sent him in 1964 as a consultant. In the foreign culture\, the young architect grew on specific tasks. In addition to complex planning proposals for the Kathmandu Valley\, he realized remarkable buildings that combine tradition and modernity\, in harmony with the natural and cultural landscape.\nAfter his return to Vienna in 1974\, his committed academic and social attitude became obvious. As rector of the Academy of Fine Arts\, the bustling bohemian became a defining figure on the Viennese architectural scene.\nCarl Pruscha lives architecture in a variety of different influences\, which come together in his architectural concepts and ideas as well as his realized projects. In this sense his life and work could stand for what the title of the lecture series expresses: “affect and be affected”. \nBiography\nCarl Pruscha is an Austrian architect and was Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1988 on. He studied architecture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts between 1955 and 1960 with Lois Welzenbacher and Roland Rainer and at Harvard University\, Boston\, until 1964. Following his studies\, he spent ten years in Nepal as a UN and UNESCO adviser to the Nepalese government on spatial planning. After a teaching period in the USA\, he was appointed professor for planning principles and building research at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1978.\nFrom 1988 to 2001\, Carl Pruscha was Rector of the Academy. Under his aegis\, teaching was restructured\, and the academy’s curriculum expanded. Various spatial expansion projects for the academy were implemented\, such as the construction of the academy courtyard in Makartgasse and the renovation of the Semper depot.\nIn 2001 he moved to the Chair of Design and Habitat\, Environment & Conservation from which he retired in 2004.\nCarl Pruscha received numerous awards for his works\, including the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art and the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna. \n\nLecture Series SoSe 2023\nLecture 1: March 29\, 6:30 pm – PAREID\nLecture 2: March 30\, 6:30 pm – Stefan Holst\nLecture 3: May 10\, 6:30 pm – Christina Jauernik\nLecture 4: May 24\, 6:30 pm – Andrej Radman\nLecture 5: June 14\, 6:30 pm – Carl Pruscha \nAffect is often associated with individual feelings\, a vehicle that has shaped discourses and practices in diverse fields for and around human experience. In architecture\, its most widespread registration came with the phenomenological turn as an enterprise to downplay „retinal\,“ rational\, and conceptual agendas. Instead\, architecture becomes „atmosphere\,“ a playground for the senses. For its part\, the subject‘s body becomes the primary means of understanding and relating to this space haptically. In recent years\, this approach has been criticized from various angles. On the one hand\, there are positions that confront the positivism of phenomenological architecture\, arguing that it is circumscribed to the normative regimes of emotions\, while also ignoring the political and social implications of affects. On the other hand\, others overcome the „experientialism“ of the phenomenological method by building on contemporary posthuman and non-anthropocentric dispositions. Whether accounting for the augmented conditions of human experience through technological means or directly for non-human mediated relations\, affect broadens the psychological scope of human emotions in its traditional understanding to engage ecologically with the more complex context of affecting and being affected.\nIn this context\, this lecture series proposes to bring together (disparate) voices from practice\, theory and research that expand\, reaffirm\, reject or displace new\, unexplored\, and established notions of affect in architecture.

SUMMARY:Affect Lecture4 - Andrej Radman
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series SoSe 2023\nLecture 1: March 29\, 6:30 pm – PAREID\nLecture 2: March 30\, 6:30 pm – Stefan Holst\nLecture 3: May 10\, 6:30 pm – Christina Jauernik\nLecture 4: May 24\, 6:30 pm – Andrej Radman\nLecture 5: June 14\, 6:30 pm – Carl Pruscha \n \nANDREJ RADMAN (Delft University of Technology)\n \nSubjects as Effects of Affects: A Pedagogy of the Senses\n\n\nAbstract\nThe Affect Theory challenges the alleged primacy of the ‘physical’ world. We engage with a world replete with capacities\, tendencies and values\, not with an aggregate of objects. In the Nietzschean tenor\, there is no antonym for the word ‘value’ and it can certainly not be found in the word ‘fact’. The emphasis is on the encounter\, where experience is seen as an emergence that returns the body to a process field of exteriority. Sensibility introduces an aleatory moment into the development of thought and turns contingency into the very condition for thinking. Not only does this upset logical identity and opposition\, it also places the limit of thinking beyond any dialectical system. Thought cannot activate itself by thinking; it has to be provoked. Art and architecture may provide such provocation. If to think differently one has to feel differently\, and if the ultimate purpose of design is to change us\, then architecture is a ‘psychotropic practice’ that modulates and compels routines of subjectification. This makes the concept of affect fundamentally transindividual. The paper seeks to invigorate radical empiricism as a means of tapping not into the solipsistic world of design\, but into the relation of exteriority – the design of the world. Such an anti-representational disposition resonates strongly with Félix Guattari’s Ethico-Aesthetics\, or eco-logical ‘power-to’ experimentation\, that seeks to challenge all-too-reductionist ego-logical conceptions of ‘power-over’ relations. The lecture juxtaposes three conceptual triads related to feeling\, acting and learning: Charles Sanders Peirce’s firstness\, secondness and thirdness; James Jerome Gibson’s Ambient Optic Array\, Occluding Edge and Affordance; and Gilles Deleuze’s three syntheses of time. The concept of affect\, as a near synonym of affordance\, becomes indispensable in overcoming the subject/object opposition by tying sensibility to sense\, and matter to manner. The main thesis is inspired by Gilbert Simondon’s ‘formula’ that knowledge of individuation is itself the individuation of knowledge. \nKeywords\nAsignifying Semiotics\, Epiphylogenetic Memory\, Ethico-Aesthetics\, Transcendental Empiricism\, Radical Perspectivism\, Speculative Pragmatism\, Transindividuation. \nBio\nAndrej Radman is Assistant Professor of Architecture Philosophy and Theory\, and coordinator of the Ecologies of Architecture research group at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment\, Delft University of Technology. Over the past eighteen years Radman’s research has focused on the nexus between Architecture and Radical Empiricism. He is a member of the National Committee on Deleuze and Guattari Scholarship\, and the production editor and member of the editorial board of the peer-reviewed architecture theory journal Footprint. Radman is a co-editor of Critical and Clinical Cartographies (EUP\, 2017)\, Architecture of Life and Death (RLI\, 2021)\, and The Space of Technicity (RLI\, 2023). He is the author of Gibsonism (TUD\, 2012) and Ecologies of Architecture: Essays on Territorialisation (EUR\, 2021). SUMMARY:Thermochromic Topologies
DESCRIPTION:Thermochromic Topologies\nIntegration of non-visual design parameters into generative design processes and the communication of invisible parameters of thermal comfort via embedded material performance in responsive architectural elements. \nWith increasing awareness of our environmental responsibilities\, architects must seek out alternative solutions to mechanical heating and cooling where possible. The resulting shift in paradigm – from a demand of a homogeneously tempered indoor environment to a heterogeneous field of varying comfort zones – requires new design tools to actively communicate qualities of space. Most thermal comfort parameters are invisible and hard to communicate across distances. This research aims to find solutions for this dilemma while exploring it from the architect’s position. Sustainability\, passive environmental strategies and ecological thinking are embraced creatively and innovatively. This pushes the boundaries of design thinking as well as finding new digital fabrication and design methodologies to generate intricate and sustainable ornament. Thermochromic materials change colour when the material’s temperature exceeds a certain threshold. The effect can be a change in hue\, saturation or transparency. \nThe project focused on a change of transparency\, where the disappearance of a coating layer reveals the underlying material above a temperature threshold of 27C – the same temperature above which a room’s temperature is widely perceived as uncomfortable. Computational fluid dynamics simulations (CFD) were used to simulate changes in temperature and airflow along surfaces. The experiments were set up in a way that gave each surface distinct topological characters such as density\, thickness\, directionality\, gradient. The results were used as an input for a digital generative design process. The geometries were fabricated using a cnc mill and coated with thermochromic ink. The prototypes were then exposed to heat in a series of experiments and the changing visual appearance is documented systematically using thermal imagery\, photos and videos. The gained material was catalogued\, compared and knowledge about the relationship between\, simulation\, prototype and performance was gained. \nThere is demand for innovative design solutions for communicating environmental conditions and parameters of indoor climate to inhabitants through smart materials and passive strategies. Existing research into thermochromic elements in architecture is often focussing on the technological aspects of surface actuation. This research project investigated the design consequences deriving from a generative design process\, that uses invisible environmental parameters to drive performative reliefs. \nThe results of the project will be exhibited at the department on the third floor. SUMMARY:CITIES THEN AND NOW IN INDIA
DESCRIPTION:CITIES THEN AND NOW IN INDIA – we divide we fall \nIndia is one of world’s oldest civilisation. Our cities are changing drastically over a period of time\, shifting towards fortified communities. Historically\, more than 4500 years ago\, Indus Valley civilisation\, mohenjo daro and Harappa cities architecture showcased how greatly these cities were egalitarian or in other words how urban planning conflated towards egalitarian society. And now with the emergence of gated communities people prefer being insular\, afraid and skeptical of neighbours or neighbourhood and leading to clear social stratification. Previously our cities were fortified to protect us against attacks but now it strives to shelter parochials and commercial interests of builders in the pretext of security and privacy. Question need to be asked not just in India but around the world. Why walled\, gated\, fortified communities? Is it not discrimination and inequality? Is this democracy? It’s not too late\, time to think\, be together and build egalitarian societies.

SUMMARY:Lecture TEST
DESCRIPTION:INVITATION\nHigh Comfort – Low Impact:\nClimate Responsive Design for Buildings and Cities in Consultancy and Academic Research\n16.11.2016 um 20:00 Uhr im Großen Hörsaal \nVortragende:\nProf. Stefan Holst\, TRANSSOLAR Munich\, LFUI Guest Professor\, Innsbruck und\nProf. Thomas Auer\, TRANSSOLAR Stuttgart\, TUM\, Chair for Building Technology and Climate Responsive Design\, Munich \nClimate responsive design means minimizing the negative impact of the exterior environment while taking advantage of potential natural energy sources. An energy efficient building does not have to be uncomfortable — in fact\, they are often described by their occupants as more comfortable than conventional buildings.\nBy creatively incorporating local resources as sun\, outside air and earth into building systems a natural and healthy interior climate can be achieved. Enhancing the presence of daylight in a room not only minimizes energy expended on artificial lighting\, it can also dramatically improve one´s architectural experience and provide a more pleasant working and living environment.\nEmploying adaptive comfort with natural ventilation and radiant cooling eliminates the undesirable effects associated with traditional air conditioning.\nThe principles of climate responsive design may be successfully applied to practically any city in any environment in the world.\nThe application of climate responsive design principles in consulting engineering practice will be presented in Transsolar project work from all over the world and complemented by academic research results from the chair of Prof. Thomas Auer at the TUM in Munich.
