SUMMARY:Porosity Matters: Impulse Lecture Series 1
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bachelor’s design studio “Porosity Matters”\, selected speakers will hold short\, impulse seminar lectures in the winter semester 2025/26. \nOrganised by Andreas Körner & Charlotte Thorn\, four hybrid mini lectures will take place on Wednesdays as part of the studio\, hosted by the Department of Experimental Architecture – Studio Prof. Marjan Colletti.\nThe invited speakers are architects and researchers\, operating in fields ranging from landscape architecture to future climates\, biocentric and digital design\, and new forms of ecological thinking. \n  \n22/10/2025 – 13:00\nDr. Johanna Just (ETH Zürich\, Chair of Being Alive)\nAmphibious Grounds: Exploring the Vital Milieu of the Upper Rhine\n[ZOOM link] \n5/11/2025 – 13:00\nKlara Jörg & Julian Raffetseder (Future Problems Architecture Studio)\nHow to live together in the climate crisis?\n[ZOOM link] \n3/12/2025 – 13:00\nAlexandra Lăcătușu (UCL\, Bio-ID)\nTowards Biocentric Design\n[ZOOM link] \n7/1/2026 – 17:00 21/1/2026 – 18:00 (hybrid screening)\nBarry Wark (UPenn\, Barry Wark Studio)\nThe Architecture of Ecology\n[ZOOM link] \n  \nZoom links will be provided closer to the dates. The lectures are part of the taught design studio and will be public\, but the comments and Q&A will be limited to the students attending the course. \nCourse: 848136 – PJ Design Studio 3 “Porosity Matters”\nTeaching: Andreas Körner & Charlotte Thorn \n  \n

SUMMARY:HALFFORMS HALFWAY Research project lecture
DESCRIPTION:Karolin Schmidbaur\, Lukas Allner\, Gonzalo Vaillo  \nJanurary 21\, 2026\, 7:00 pm\nOrtner & Stanger\nProject Research Space\nFürstenweg 66\, im Hof\nInnsbruck\nresearch abstract\nresearch project\, 2023 – 2027 \nThe growing scarcity of fossil resources and the global threat of climate change are\nputting considerable pressure on architecture\, demanding new concepts that go be-\nyond the range of established building materials\, systems and processes.\nAdditionally\, advanced algorithmic tools in architectural design and fabrication\, such\nas simulation\, machine learning and machine vision\, allow designers to cope with\ncomplex materials and geometry\, and enable the use of non-standard\, transformable\nbuilding parts with a complex geometry.\nThe proposal integrates these separate approaches emerging in architectural dis-\ncourse and related fields into a methodology for understanding the architectural po-\ntential of vulcanized fiber and developing a prototypical building method [system].\nVulcanized fiber is a little known\, industrial\, cellulose-based product\, produced in\nsheets. Besides a good ecological balance\, this material is durable\, strong\, and light-\nweight\, offering significant potential for architectural application. Of special interest\nis the material’s natural deformation as a result of the drying process. It not only pro-\nduces a distinct\, natural form aesthetics\, but also a potentially improved structural\nperformance as well as an ambiguous functionality and spatial quality. In this context\nit is essential to study the levels of control between form definition and a self-forming\nprocess.\nThe current proposal builds on developments in paper-based construction and aims\nat investigating the aesthetic\, functional\, spatial\, and constructive potential of vulca-\nnized fiber\, used as building components in architecture. Understanding the distinct\ncharacteristics of parts and the emerging implications for potential correlations is the\nbasis for a bottom-up method of designing spatial structures. Hereby\, natural-phys-\nical phenomena are combined with a hybrid working method of digital and analog\ntechniques – to formulate a contemporary articulation of sustainable architecture.\nBy following the dynamic principles of the distinct material to conceptualize archi-\ntectural environments this research aims at activating a new resource in architecture\nand expanding the aesthetic\, functional and spatial norms of a sustainable building\nculture.
