Manufacturing Strategy

manufacturingstrategy01.jpgThis assignment focuses on the development of manufacturing strategy for complex 3D curved structural surfaces. The target is the achievement of light weight, high strength, time and cost efficient construction systems for medium to large scale structures, all important factors when it comes to modern day construction and especially for the construction of complex geometries. The assignment is not only about the theoretical development of such systems but also about their materialization in the form of 1:10 scale prototypes.
The starting point of the development process will be the simplification of a 3D curved surface into 2D geometrical patterns or components which can be prefabricated, transported to a desired location and assembled into the desired shape. This 2D components or patterns and there assembling methods should have the capability to adapt into different curvature typology making them reusable in different constructions. Developed manufacturing methods will be implemented into the design of “boat hulls” as case study. Boat hulls are very demanding structures. They are complex in shape and require light weight, high strength, fully enclosed skin, providing good boundaries for the development of the desired manufacturing strategy. Boat hulls also provide good scale for the development of the systems making them applicable into architecture.

Workshop 2. 24/04/2017 (Monday)
Morning Session 11:00 – 14:00
Presentation + discussion
Focus = Evaluation of the design concepts of the 3D boat hull geometry and the possible manufacturing strategy.

Afternoon Session 15:00 – 18:00
Working over the project combined with two sessions of desk critics
Focus = Rework the weak part of the proposed construction system and clarify how to improve it till the next session. Clarify what is the best way to simulate and materialize the proposed systems by the next session.


Workshop 3. 08/05/2017 (Monday)
Morning Session 11:00 – 14:00
Presentation + discussion
Focus = Evaluation of the pros and cons of the construction systems proposed by each group.

Afternoon Session 15:00 – 18:00
Working over the project combined with two sessions of desk critics
Focus = Rework the weak part of each construction system and clarify how to prepare for a mock up construction till the next session.


Workshop 4. 22/05/2017 (Monday) till 24/05/2017 (Wednesday)
Morning Session 11:00 – 14:00 on 22/05/2017 (Monday)
Presentation + discussion (3 units)
Focus = Proper evaluation of the pros and cons of the construction mock-ups proposed by each group. Advice the groups on the construction of the mock-ups. Mock-up Manufacturing Session (Monday afternoon till Wednesday full day) Each group manufactures a mock-up of their proposals 1 to 10 scale.


Workshop 5. 29/05/2017 (Monday)
Final Review 11:00 – 14:00
Presentation + discussion
Focus = Evaluation of each project.
